Shirley Thomas, Ph.D., is a child and family psychologist in Longmont, Colorado. She has worked with families of divorce as a therapist, mediator, and evaluator for over twenty-five years. She also teaches court-ordered divorce education classes in Boulder County. One of these classes is Coparent Solutions, an effective skill-based "coparenting class" for separated parents in conflict.

Dr. Thomas's most recent book, Two Happy Homes: a working guide for parents & stepparents after divorce and remarriage, provides divorced and separated parents with specific advice for bringing new partners into the lives of their children. Written in a highly readable and supportive style, the book shows parents and stepparents how to work together successfully across two homes. The various roles of adults in the children's parenting network are explored, and the usefulness of empathy is presented in an easy-to-understand way. This book is the first to outline specific communication skills for remarried parents to use with parenting figures in the child's other home. Two Happy Homes is the sequel to Shirley Thomas' Parents are Forever — it helps divorced coparents follow through with the best parenting practices as they move on with their lives and remarry.

Dr. Thomas's first book, Parents Are Forever: a step-by-step guide to becoming successful coparents after divorce, was published in 1995. It quickly became recognized by judges, attorneys, and mental health professionals as an invaluable resource for parents. The revised 2004 edition addresses contemporary issues affecting divorced families, and recent changes in terminology.

In addition to Two Happy Homes and Parents Are Forever, Dr. Thomas co-authored Divorced But Still My Parents with Dorothy Rankin, a children's writer and graphic designer. This companion book teaches children how to work through the effects of grief after divorce.
